2011 Editorial Calendar
Beginning with our September - October 2011 issue, Skipping Stones will carry an educational feature on Energy and Ecology topics in each issue. In this on-going feature, we plan to deal with one or more of these topics: renewable energy, solar energy, energy conservation and efficiency, water quality and water conservation, watershed protection, sustainability, community needs, ecological issues, climate change and our common future. We invite your contributions (1,000 words or less) for this need of the hour. Send us your thoughts, ideas, practices and experiences for possible publication! Both young writers and educators are invited to contribute their voices by e-mail or snail mail.
Jan.—Feb. 2011. Cultural Diversity and Global Expressions
New Year celebrations in various cultures; African American, women role models, minority and disability issues; languages, and reaching across cultures. Photo essay on Mali.
March — April 2011. Spring is in the Air!
Connecting with nature, Springtime renewal, youth poetry, magical moments, spirituality and turning points in life, photo essay on nature or wildlife.How do you live in harmony with nature and the world? Featured Region: Southeast Asia.
May — Aug. 2011. Best Books to Read, No Child Left Inside this Summer
International travel experiences, summer activities and adventures, volunteering, taking action to improve the world, and Challenging times in life. Skipping Stones Book Awards feature outstanding multicultural/nature books, teaching resources & educational videos/DVDs.
Sept. — Oct. 2011. Youth Honor Awards, Back to School and World Art
The Annual Youth Honor Awards showcase students’ writing and art on multicultural and nature themes. Other multicultural writings and art will also be included in the issue. Welcome back to School, and an Art feature that would consist of more art-- pictures and drawings -- than written words.
Nov. — Dec. 2011. Culture & Community
Holidays, celebrations and traditions, peace, justice, role models, inspirations, the individual and society. What do you love about your culture, community, language or country? What challenges do youth in your community, schools and country face? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your community? A Photo essay on the Wetlands.
Each issue includes a photo essay focusing on a region, country or culture of the world. We also welcome contributions for our regular departments: BookShelf, NEWS, Teacher's Guide, Folktale!, Editor’s Mailbag, What’s On Your Mind?, Taking Action, Dear Hanna and Health Rocks!
