Rift<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>B<\/strong><\/span>eyond the horizon,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">the sun begins its descent<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">into darkness. From my boat,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">an off-white wooden petal floating<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">on the summer-calm Winnipeg,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I breathe in the forsaken festival.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">Unshackled by night, swirling<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">mixtures of maroon and black<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">frolic in the sky, like children of the sun<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">set free. Slowly,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">the hero of this requiem creeps up,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">its luminescence pale and misty.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">Then the stars, tarnished and enigmatic,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">arrive, disrupting their lives<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">to reach the <em>moon<\/em>, everything<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">attempting to rivet a frayed bond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">I am an outcast in my home<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">shrouded by inanimate shadows and feign,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">witnessing from afar a tale of sorrow<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">for what could have been,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">Kites mingling above star-kissed hills,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">fingers clasped with another\u2019s under<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">a candle-lit table, the laughter of children<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">orbiting the room like Earth orbits the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">As the ceremony comes to an end,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">my body tilts with the breath of the sea,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">another wandering soul exhumed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 16px;\">on a boat drifting towards and away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\">2.\u00a0 Anticipation<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> wake up to my alarm, groggily, fumble for the snooze button,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">My heart racing from the jolt. As the blaring ceases<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I rub off relics of the night, expecting clarity, only to be greeted<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">by flurries of light cast from the window-framed sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">The door creaks as I stumble out of the shadows and into a man-made ravine,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">the corridor dividing the subconscious as the sky does heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I enter the kitchen and grab a naked piece of toast. I pop it in the oven,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">watching expressions crease along the crusted ridges of its face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">With each bite comes the nostalgia of emptiness sunken deep<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">inside and lurking within the cavities of my stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I shove the remaining sliver in my mouth and swallow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">The futility hisses in my ears like an engine and something<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">pounds in my chest fiercely, trying to escape. But I don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I descend the winding stairs leading to the blue expanse,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">walk down the asphalt weathered by a trillion steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I search for a raindrop, a signal I\u2019m heading down the right path.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">I look to the sky and wait,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">a moment of silence<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #003366;\">anticipating its touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #800000;\"><em>\u2014By Gabriel Cheng, age 16, New York. Poetry and prose have always been my passion, driving me to become an editor-in-chief for my school\u2019s award-winning literature and art magazine, as well as news editor for our campus newspaper. Through both of these positions, I have cultivated a desire to spread my knowledge and to teach others.
